Get My Relaxation On

By Cyrus | January 25, 2011 - 9:39 pm |January 25, 2011 On the Side

Drinking a nice Merlot, wrapped in a blanket, and playing World of Warcraft. That’s how I get my relaxation on after a long day at the office. My three boys are asleep and safe, my wife is “doing her thing”, and my Worgen Hunter just dinged level 65. All is … Continue reading →

Zombie Dice, Take 2

I was informed by a fellow father geek that I stated Zombie Dice was my least favorite game of 2010 (according to the Dice Tower podcast, episode 195). This is a true statement. My experiences with Zombie Dice in 2010 were not good. The game was (in hindsight) poorly explained to … Continue reading →

After listening to the Dice Tower podcast (episode 196), I downloaded the free iPhone/iPad game Zombie Dice. This game is a (shotgun) blast! I loved it so much, I ran down to my local Games By James store and purchased the real thing. Now, game in hand, I can’t wait … Continue reading →

Toys in a Box

This weekend, my two oldest boys played Rattlesnake, Exago, and Blokus a good deal. And by “play” I don’t mean getting out the game and looking for players. No, what I mean is that they get out the games and then come up with fun things to do with them … Continue reading →

It Doesn’t Take Much

A friend of mine, Steve, hosted an all day games event at his house over the weekend. Nothing special. No balloons. No cover band. No open bar. It was a fantastic time and all it took was a couple of tables and chairs, some food, good people, and great games. … Continue reading →

Where Are the Sports Games?

By Nate | January 21, 2011 - 9:19 am |January 21, 2011 Geek 411

A dad has kids on the go, but can’t always keep up. They all love to play board games, but where are the games about sports? If the dad can’t run outside, how about playing sports games sitting down? Do such games exist? Lucky for him (and you), there are games to be had! Continue reading →

Miniature Style Games for Kids

A fellow geek and father writes to us looking for some game advice. He loves miniature games and wants to play them with his son. The problem is, his son is only five and the miniatures that are available to him are not “kid friendly”. Are there games out there that will fit the bill? Continue reading →

Ich bin ein Geek

I was asked the other day what it meant to be a “geek”. This fellow co-worker of mine began to answer her own question by asking other questions which were, “do you wear silly shirts, awkward around the opposite sex, or just kind of odd?” I waited until she was … Continue reading →

Cookie Fu: Grandmaster’s Return Game Review

By Cyrus | January 18, 2011 - 11:29 pm |August 15, 2011 Reviews

I really like this dice game. It is fast, easy to teach, and easy to play. You can sit down with a friend or up to 5 other people and have several battles in less than an hour. Not many games provide speed and entertainment with a high level of customization. Cookie Fu delivers with a solid punch of awesomeness! Continue reading →

Feed the Kitty Game Review

There is absolutely zero decision making to be made and not even anything fun to look at short of some little purple wooden mice. The game publisher’s suggested age range for this game is 4 years old and up. I think the age range is more likely ages 2 to 4. Continue reading →

Up the Water Spout Game Review

Gimmicks in games are like the Force; they can be used for good or evil. Used for good, they can augment the gaming experience by evoking the theme or giving players a novel mechanism for resolving game events. Used for evil, they distract from the game, divide attention and frustrate players. Continue reading →

Rattlesnake Game Review

Fun with magnets! Very strong magnets! The kind of magnets that could erase your computer’s hard drive a good 10 feet away. But that’s part of the fun, and the chaos, of the game. Surprisingly, it is the eggs you have to watch out for, not the rattlesnakes. Continue reading →
