About Cyrus

Editor in Chief, Owner/Operator, Board Game Fanatic, Father of Three, and Nice Guy, Cyrus has always enjoyed board, card, miniature, role playing, and video games, but didn't get back into the hobby seriously until early 2000. Once he did, however, he was hooked. He now plays board games with anyone and everyone he can, but enjoys playing with his children the most. Video games continue to be of real interest, but not as much as dice and little miniatures. As he carefully navigates the ins and outs of parenting, he does his very best to bestow what wisdom he has and help nurture his children's young minds. It is his hope and ambition to raise three strong, honorable men who will one day go on to do great things and buy their Mom and Dad a lobster dinner. Cyrus goes by the handle fathergeek on Board Game Geek. You can also check him out on CyrusKirby.com. Yes, he has a URL that is his name. His ego knows no bounds, apparently....

Dice Tower of Epic Awesomeness

Almost all dice towers have the “tower” portion which is a vertical hollow with several slanted shelves on the inside that “tumble” the dice for maximum randomness. These dice then spill out into a tray located at the bottom which catches and contains the dice. Dice tower designs range from the exceedingly functional to the insanely artistic. I thought I had seen them all, then I saw this. Continue reading

Geek Gear For Father’s Day

As we became more tech savvy in both our own understanding of the world and the culture around us, the young boys and girls of my generation began to give our father’s more “geeky” presents, even though we had no inkling of what “geeky” meant. Digital watches, Walkmans, tapes, and records became the norm and expressing our love through the medium of pasta art became a thing of the past. Continue reading

Doing the Right Thing

Doing the right thing is oftentimes not the easy thing, nor does it reward as often as it socially punishes the individual for doing so. How then, as parents, can we communicate to our children the importance of standing up for what is right and speaking out boldly in the face of injustice knowing full well that they might be attacked for doing so? Continue reading

Adventure Coach PSA

Seldom do I come across something on YouTube that I think worthy of posting on the Father Geek. I’m not stuck up, it’s just that there is so much goodness out there, I need a filter separate the “truly awesome” from the “pretty darn cool”. Otherwise, I’d be posting all day. I can’t actually get … Continue reading

Dakota Game Review

Players take on the role as leaders of a tribe of Native Americans or as a a leader for a group of Settlers. The land is abundant with resources, but not all resources are equal or even wanted. To the Native Americans, the land provides food and shelter, but to the Settlers the land provides building materials and riches. The two cultures clash and must compete for the same resources to survive. Continue reading

Slap Jack Game Review

In this game, each player is attempting to be faster than the other players and collect all the cards. This is done by literally slapping their hand down on a stack of cards when a specific card is revealed. If done correctly, their pile of cards will grow while their opponent’s piles quickly dwindle to nothing. This is a fast game that geeks of any age can play anywhere, anytime. Continue reading
