Five Things to Consider Before Sending Your Game to a Reviewer (Including Me)

Here are five important points to consider before you send your game to a reviewer, including yours truly. I’m sure there are more, but I’m a lazy guy and five is all I want to point out. If you have more, please feel free to leave a comment and add to the list. I should also note that this list is going to make me unpopular with others. But let’s keep this in perspective and understand it is just my opinion. Continue reading

The Positive Side to Negative Reviews?

Every once in a while, the Reviewer community likes to kick up the dust by having a lively debate on the pros and cons of negative reviews. The argument normally consists of two parts. The first is if a reviewer can be taken seriously if they only provide positive reviews. The second questions if a Reviewer should publish a negative review at all. To bastardize the Bard, “To be negative or not to be negative is the question.” Continue reading

Monster City Planners Game Review

A city planner has much to consider. They must take into consideration traffic, sewer systems, and maintaining existing infrastructure. It’s a complicated balancing act where the new must fit in with the old on a tight budget. Of course, the rampaging monsters and giant robots don’t help much. But then again, a giant squid destroying a city block is a lot cheaper than hiring bulldozers. Continue reading

In Review: Father Geek’s Monthly Newsletter (April 2014)

March was a surprisingly busy month for my family. Pinewood Derby car races, cleaning up a yard full of no less than 4 months of frozen dog poop (I have found a new circle of Hell, by the way), and the various activities that come with raising 3 active children. In short, a typical month with an atypical amount of energy spent to get through it. Thank Odin for caffeine! Continue reading

In Review: Father Geek’s Monthly Newsletter (May 2014)

Another month has slipped by like a ninja in the night…or a ship…or a ship full of ninjas. It’s May and that means Spring in Southern Minnesota is “kind of” here. Last year, we had one bugger of a snowstorm in May that took down trees and had many people questioning their decision to live in the upper Midwest. Throwing caution to the wind, as it were, everyone in Minnesota is now wearing shorts. Temperature be damned… Continue reading

VISITOR in Blackwood Grove Game Review (prepublished version)

With a flash and a bang, something alien entered our atmosphere and crashed in Blackwood Groove. Only two people saw this event. A young kid who was dreamily looking at stars from their bedroom window and a shadowy government agency who constantly monitors outer space. Now it’s race not only for discovery, but for survival, for an alien has landed and the world will never be the same. Continue reading

Father Geek’s Top 5 Games Played in 2012

This year was full of exciting new adventures at our gaming tables! But 2012 was also a year of two giant upsets. The first being the United States Presidential Election (depending on whom you were voting for) and the end of the world. Yeah, didn’t happen (again) and a good thing, too! Having a giant rogue planet collide with us or an alien invasion that enslaves what little is left of the human race would spoil my game nights and really put me out. Lucky for us, the sun keeps rising and dice keep rolling. With the end of the year coming close, it is time once again to reflect on our many accomplishments and defeats at the gaming table! Continue reading

Dr. Eureka Game Review

Emmy-nominated host of the television show Brain Games, Jason Silva, said “Creativity and insight almost always involve an experience of acute pattern recognition: the eureka moment in which we perceive the interconnection between disparate concepts or ideas to reveal something new.” In this game, creativity must be pushed by the need to shout EUREKA first! Continue reading

Among the Stars Game Review (prepublished version)

Not too long ago, space was a battleground. Many fought and died among the stars. That time has passed and peace has been declared by all the warring races. In an effort to keep the peace and establish meaningful relationships built on trust and trade, the new governing body known as the Alliance has ordered all space-faring civilizations to build space stations to be a beacon of peace and friendship in the darkness of space. You have been hand-selected to represent your race and construct such a space station. You have limited time and resources, but you must succeed for the betterment of all. Continue reading

Dice Bowl Football Game Review

The roar of the crowd is deafening, but you don’t hear them. All your attention is focused on the game. Your assistant coaches stand a respectful distance away, but are noticeably anxiousness. Looking into the field, you see your quarterback standing in the huddle, looking at you for direction. It’s the 4th quarter with 30 seconds left on the clock. The next choice you make could win the game or send you home, defeated. Taking a deep breath, you call the play, hoping you made the right choice. Continue reading

In Review: Father Geek’s Monthly Newsletter (September 2014)

This month we have games about playground shenanigans, new twists on old classics, time travel, fantasy battles, illegal liquor running, Norse Gods, fiery mages, alien politicians, bar fights, football, and a mystery game I cannot speak about until such time I have been given explicit instructions to do so by a small army of lawyers dressed in ninja outfits. I’m joking, of course. The lawyers wear suits. Continue reading
