Hasbro is going to release a new version of their Battleship game line titled Battleship: Galaxies. My oldest little geek loves to play Battleship with me and this game looks like the next best thing. Miniature spaceships? Battles in space? Pew-pew lasers? Yes, please!
With a release date in June 7th, 2011, you can expect this game to be on a number of gift lists for Father’s Day. Me, included. You get to design your own game and strategy, which is a lot like “milk and cookies” for me. To put it another way, I’ll eat it up, ask for seconds, and be fat and happy. There is so much geek skill potential in this game it makes my head spin in a giddy fashion that is decidedly child-like.
Sound interesting? Decide for yourself based on what little information is currently available. Here is an official document (PDF) from Wizards of the Coast (i.e. Hasbro) about the game. It is more than enough for me buy a ticket to board the hype train.

Also out this summer (he sez w/his fingers crossed) is Frank Branham’s Battle Beyond Space (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/18400/battle-beyond-space) which is a multi-player (3 or 4 player) space fleet battle game.
As a long-time playtester, I want you guys to know that you can seriously get your pew-pew laser thing going here… and it’s done in 45-60 minutes!
Very nice and exciting, Mark! Thanks for sharing!
The pdf says ages 13 and up. Really? How hard is this going to be? My 13 year old plays War of the Ring, for heaven’s sake!
Ha! Nice.
I have always used the noted age range as nothing more than guidelines. I have a 6 year old who plays 12+ games just fine. I also have a 60+ year old mother who still struggles with 10+ age range games. 🙂
The game looks to be scenario driven, or at the least, could be easily made to play as such. You could adjust the difficult accordingly based on that alone.
Looks like a more complicated Heroscape. That’s not a bad thing, but might explain the age rating. 13+ is odd, though. Usually 12+ is the max, isn’t it? It’s like there’s some kind of age inflation going on.
