About Cyrus

Editor in Chief, Owner/Operator, Board Game Fanatic, Father of Three, and Nice Guy, Cyrus has always enjoyed board, card, miniature, role playing, and video games, but didn't get back into the hobby seriously until early 2000. Once he did, however, he was hooked. He now plays board games with anyone and everyone he can, but enjoys playing with his children the most. Video games continue to be of real interest, but not as much as dice and little miniatures. As he carefully navigates the ins and outs of parenting, he does his very best to bestow what wisdom he has and help nurture his children's young minds. It is his hope and ambition to raise three strong, honorable men who will one day go on to do great things and buy their Mom and Dad a lobster dinner. Cyrus goes by the handle fathergeek on Board Game Geek. You can also check him out on CyrusKirby.com. Yes, he has a URL that is his name. His ego knows no bounds, apparently....

The Fiasco Companion Book Review

The role-playing game, Fiasco, focuses on storytelling that has some very tragic and hopelessly flawed characters. And while the story the players cooperatively share is most certainly the highlight of the experience, one cannot discount the importance of the character and story development it includes. For those looking to improve their game play experience, a companion is available to help guide them in strange new directions! Continue reading

The Lacuna Expanse: A New Empire Game Review

It is known as the Lacuna Expanse, a vast stretch of stars and inhabitable planets rich with resources. Like settlers and explorers of old, we took to the stars and made our way to this new frontier. What we found was all that we had hoped and dreamed for, but we were not the first to arrive. It is unclear who we are fighting, but we know we are not alone or welcome in this small corner of the galaxy. Continue reading

FREE-O Game Review

The game of Hide-And-Seek is as old as the first day a single-celled organism tried to avoid another in a pool of primordial soup. Today, we play Hide-And-Seek in hopes of outwitting and out-thinking our opponent, not because we are avoiding capture and absorption, but the premise is the same. Be caught and lose, or stay one step ahead and win! In this game, you are going to attempt to do just that! Continue reading

Fiasco Role Playing Game Review

Salvador Dali, a prominent Spanish surrealist painter, once said that “Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings.” I say that ambition without intelligence is like a bird who smacks into a window at high-speed. Ambition can blind a person and drive them forward like a hot poker. While goals are important, one must not forget to stop and observe to ensure they know where they are going and avoid pitfalls. Continue reading

Kaboom! Game Review

From behind your protective wall, you can just make out your enemy. They are peeking at you, too. You think about waving, think better of it, and fire a rocket at them instead. Not as nice as a wave, but this is war. And in war, only one side is meant to win. At least, that’s what the General says. Where is the General, by the way? You haven’t seen him for days. Oh, well. Guess you’ll just keep firing weapons until someone with authority says “stop”. Continue reading

Five Things to Consider Before Sending Your Game to a Reviewer (Including Me)

Here are five important points to consider before you send your game to a reviewer, including yours truly. I’m sure there are more, but I’m a lazy guy and five is all I want to point out. If you have more, please feel free to leave a comment and add to the list. I should also note that this list is going to make me unpopular with others. But let’s keep this in perspective and understand it is just my opinion. Continue reading

Chicken Caesar Game Review

We chickens have lived a life of repression, existing only to be slaughtered. No more, I say! Today, chicken-kind takes control of its own destiny! We must work together to govern the coop so all may be safe and prosperous. While foxes remain a constant threat, let us not forget that we are also a threat to ourselves, as ambition is just as deadly as any dagger. We live for family and honor, but we die for the greater good of the coop! Continue reading

Mines of Khurgan Dungeon Crawler Game Expansion Review

The mine was abandoned generations ago. Once, it was a source of great wealth and prosperity for the people of Keldorn, but that was then and the past has fallen into legend. The mines now belong to dark things that scurry in the shadows and avoid the light. None venture into the mine anymore except the very brave or the very stupid. Those who have returned do not speak of what they found. Continue reading

Mage Wars Core Spell Tome Game Expansion Review

As the very air around you sizzles and snaps with spent magical energy, you cannot help but admire your opponent from afar. They have done well and have been more than a match for your cunning. For every spell you have used, they have countered. An observer would think you beaten, bested by your opponent’s spells. But you smile to yourself knowing you are far from conquered. Time to use your opponent’s spells against him! Continue reading
