About Cyrus

Editor in Chief, Owner/Operator, Board Game Fanatic, Father of Three, and Nice Guy, Cyrus has always enjoyed board, card, miniature, role playing, and video games, but didn't get back into the hobby seriously until early 2000. Once he did, however, he was hooked. He now plays board games with anyone and everyone he can, but enjoys playing with his children the most. Video games continue to be of real interest, but not as much as dice and little miniatures. As he carefully navigates the ins and outs of parenting, he does his very best to bestow what wisdom he has and help nurture his children's young minds. It is his hope and ambition to raise three strong, honorable men who will one day go on to do great things and buy their Mom and Dad a lobster dinner. Cyrus goes by the handle fathergeek on Board Game Geek. You can also check him out on CyrusKirby.com. Yes, he has a URL that is his name. His ego knows no bounds, apparently....

The Rise of “Indie” Games

Being independent means you are free to go your own way without being tethered to a larger group’s ideals. Independent thinkers cast off the idea that current beliefs and the status quo are the final solution and seek out to challenge and redefine the landscape around them. This landscape could be in the political world, the financial world, and believe it or not, the game hobby world. Continue reading

Distraction Game Review

It’s easy enough to go to your local gym and workout to strengthen your body, but adding “muscle” to your memory cannot be done by bench-pressing and running laps. Lucky for you, ThinkFun has the perfect game for you to flex your memory and give it that lean, mean 6-pack you’ve always wanted your brain to sport the next time you go the the beach. Get ready for some intense memorization and focus as you and a group of your friends attempt to out memorize each other and do your very best to not be distracted. Oh, look! A butterfly!…… Continue reading

Vampire Werewolf Fairies Game Review

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, four NEW and somewhat less loved character types, Vampires, Werewolves, Fairies, and Witches, battle for control! But this is no ordinary battle! Vampires will become Werewolves (wait…is such a thing possible?), Werewolves will become Fairies (as silly as that sounds), and Witches pretty much become whatever they want because you just know there is a spell that allows them to do it. Cheaters… Continue reading

Zombie Ninja Pirates Game Review

Zombie Ninja Pirates is a fun little game which is most certainly in the “beer and pretzels” category or, for our little geeks, “apple juice and graham crackers”. It’s meant to be a “flash in the pan” type of game where you plop it out on the table, play a few games, and then move on without having to exercise a large percentage of our brain. In this, the game does exceedingly well. Continue reading

Outstanding Parents Guide to Tabletop Miniature Wargaming

There is more to our geek hobby than board games. Oh, so very, very much more. There are card games, dice games, live action games, role playing games, and the list goes on and on. One of the most visually stunning games of our collective hobby is also one of the most expensive and, some would argue, the most intimidating. I speak of the fantastic and always popular tabletop miniature wargaming. Continue reading

Shake Out! Game Review

Roll the dice and take a chance! Shake Out! is all about balancing risk vs. reward. Do it right and there is no stopping you, but don’t get too cocky. Even if you claim a card, another opponent can snatch it from you with just a few more points! To play this game right, you’ll have to push your own limits to ensure you get the cards you need, playing both defensively and offensively. Come up short, and you’ll be left far, far behind! Continue reading

Six Game Review

At first, it looks to be a simple exercise in tedious hexagon placement again and again until a simple shape is created. A ho-hum affair with little to provide in the way of entertainment or challenge. A hexagon here, a hexagon there, and you are suddenly very aware that you are close to loosing! How did this happen? Without even a hint of change, the game turns into a battle of wits as you attempt to out maneuver and out play your opponent in an ever shifting game where you are ahead one moment and then greatly behind the next! Continue reading

Dance Until You Can Dance No More!

I spend a ridiculously amount of time on the computer. I can’t help it; it’s my job. Whenever I find something that I really enjoy, and is little geek friendly, I make it a point to show it to my children so they can enjoy it, too. More times than not, this gets me in trouble with my goodly wife as my sense of humor is borderline insane. However, my little geeks love it. In the end, the cheers and laughter of my children outweight the eye rolling of my wife. Sorry, babe… Continue reading
