Hand-Drawn D&D Dungeon Maps are Pure Art

Way, way, WAY back in the day when I had hair, pimples, and an irrational fear of girls, I spent hours laboring over detailed maps of dangerous and dank dungeons I would send my friends through during our weekly Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) sessions. I still have them and very much enjoy looking through my collection with my sons.

Recently, a gallery announced it was hosting a collection of dungeon maps, hand-drawn, by outsider artist David McLouth. Art or the purest and simpliest form of nostaliga? Most likely both. Either way, “awesome”.

Read more about it if you like, or take a look at the dungeon maps!

About Cyrus

Editor in Chief, Owner/Operator, Board Game Fanatic, Father of Three, and Nice Guy, Cyrus has always enjoyed board, card, miniature, role playing, and video games, but didn't get back into the hobby seriously until early 2000. Once he did, however, he was hooked. He now plays board games with anyone and everyone he can, but enjoys playing with his children the most. Video games continue to be of real interest, but not as much as dice and little miniatures. As he carefully navigates the ins and outs of parenting, he does his very best to bestow what wisdom he has and help nurture his children's young minds. It is his hope and ambition to raise three strong, honorable men who will one day go on to do great things and buy their Mom and Dad a lobster dinner. Cyrus goes by the handle fathergeek on Board Game Geek. You can also check him out on CyrusKirby.com. Yes, he has a URL that is his name. His ego knows no bounds, apparently....

I too like looking back at my old drawings of dungeon maps and various monsters I created back in 5th grade (early 80’s). My son also got a kick out of it and decided to make some of his own. We are probably going to try and insert them into the D&D boardgames such as Castle Ravenloft and the upcoming Wrath of Ashardalon. Thing is, he made them so powerful, I have a feeling he will be dissapointed when he is taken out during the first turn of encountering one of his creations!

Optionally, Karl, you could let your son take on the role of the Monster he created. 🙂

BOOM! Down goes Daddy’s character with an automatic critical hit + one million damage with no chance of a saving throw.
